The Development of this Bit

I started this "MacGregor Releasing Bit" idea based on an 1800’s French design military Weymouth that breaks forward like this curb. This forward to half circle
design creates a reaction to follow the bit forward  and down into roundness instead of lifting and/or compressing the horse’s neck back into his chest as seen as a reaction to many curbs. It  is 7 or 5 inches from ring to ring and uses a 45 degree forward and upward  slanting mullen design mouthpiece to be arched over the tongue and  bars upon contact/rotation. The lower shank flattens in contact when  the horse releases into roundness which unloads the torque as a  reward. The flat lower shank also can't be lipped into the mouth as it  passes through the lip line at a right angle acting like a guard. This curb  rides on light contact with the same feel as a snaffle when using the  rein aids. Gaited breeds are only allowed one bit so I was searching for  a bit that was a curb applying the horizontal cues like normal but this  design also has amazing lateral cuing because of the flat lower bar shank design. If the horse lifts out of roundness or pokes his nose, it angles the lower  shank downward increasing the cue pressure to round. Horses quickly learned that extremely light pressure was to be earned by rounding and  this understanding transferred back to other bits including loose ring  snaffles. In testing, horses released down by stretching forward to the bit. No  curling or lifting back into the chest compressing the neck. The purchase runs down through the tube attaching to the mouthpiece  and the shank is welded at a right angle just under the mouthpiece. The shank is left open not closing the 180 degree turn preventing the flat  part of the shank from rotating upward controlled through proper curb chain adjustment. I extended the shank and left it slightly open because I found the design  offered a release of torque when the horse rounded aligning the lower shank with the rein releasing about half the pressure to the  mouthpiece. When the horse lifts out of roundness or thrusts his nose out, the shank activates to help re?]round the horse. The horse quickly  feels this torque release upon rounding and seeks a round position. This  reward for compliance, relationship, transfers to all other bits including  snaffles and is the main benefit of this design. The flat part of the lower shank should rotate to match the line of the  rein, releasing torque but maintaining contact creating consistency in  gaited horses.  By releasing some of the torque through aligning the  lower shank and rein and the rider softening contact as a reward for  rounding, many horses deepened their head shake which balances the  longer TWH stride. At rest, the shank has angle to the rein. During any resistance by nose  poking or lifting out of roundness, the shank has angle to the rein  activating normal curb action. When the horse complies and rounds the  rein and shank tend to align lessening the rotational effect of the curb,  rewarding compliance. Contact tends to quickly become soft as the  horse experiences this lightening action and complies resulting in  softness on the aids. The forward breaking shank causes the horse to round forward and  through negating any compression found in many curb bits. This helps  to elasticize the long muscles in the horse's back and activate a more  reaching and round foreleg swim style stroke with each stride in the  shoulder and fore legs and increases engagement for a longer stride in  the rear legs. It is the most interesting testing I have ever done.

This bit works for me and my mare

Rating 5/5
I have a 14 year-old TWH mare that has always been ridden in a chain mouth wonder bit. She racks and has a tendency to nose out and is very difficult to keep "rounded up".Within 10 minutes of starting to use this bit, she was starting to flex at the poll and reach for the bit. I only had to use a very light touch on the reins to correct her. I had tried several well-known 3-part mouthpiece bits with no success. My mare is happy and responsive in the MacGregor bit and, for me, that makes the price my last consideration.
